TL;DR On Wednesday May 20 from 3am EDT:
- KCWorks will be read-only
- Profiles, Groups, and Sites will be unavailable during the launch window
We’re writing to let you know that starting on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, Knowledge Commons will implement a new login and registration system, CILogon, replacing our current authentication platform. Users will now have the ability to add a new email address, modify organizational membership, and change their login method without needing assistance from our user support team. In addition, we are rolling out a complete reboot of profiles, which now allows for additional customization our users have long asked for!
Once we make the switch to the new system, no separate action is needed on your part to ensure you can access your Commons account. When you go to access the Commons for the first time, you will be prompted to select a new login method. Options include an institutional single sign‑on or a trusted external account (Google, ORCID, GitHub, or Microsoft). You will then associate that login with your existing Commons account. Logging in with separate Knowledge Commons usernames and passwords (KCID) will be eliminated. CILogon supports thousands of institutions globally as well as several widely used identity providers. If you’re looking for more information, please view this FAQ.
On Wednesday, May 20 at 3am EDT [timezone converter], there will be downtime while we transition to the new system. For updates on site availability, please make sure you follow us on Mastodon or Bluesky. We really appreciate your patience as we transition to the new system.
