Welcome to week one of the Knowledge Quest! Every great adventure has to start somewhere, and this week is your chance to get to know Knowledge Commons and to let the community get to know you.
Whether you’re creating your account today or you’ve been a member of the Commons for years, this week’s challenge is all about charting a path ahead. In future weeks, you’ll be delving deeper into our tools, but right now, all you need to do is get a feeling for your surroundings.
Getting started with each week’s challenges
In order to complete the challenges and receive a badge, you’ll need to go to The Commons Room discussion and write a short reply with your responses to the weekly prompt. Once you’ve done this, you’ll have earned a badge that will appear on your Commons profile!
This is how you’ll get to the Commons Room in order to earn your badge!
- Create an account, or if you already have one, log in.
- Join The Commons Room group–go to the URL linked here and click the “Join Group” button
- Select Forum from the group’s navigation menu. This is where you’ll go to see all of the weekly challenges in the quest, so get comfortable with these steps!
- Find the Week 1 discussion board post under the topics listed. Select that topic and scroll down. There will be an area on the screen for you to reply to this post.
This week’s quest!
How does someone describe what Knowledge Commons is? Is it a publishing tool? Is it a collaboration tool? Is it a scholarly communication tool? Is it all of the above? This week’s prompt will ask you to consider this as you familiarize yourself with the platform. Take some time exploring all the areas of Knowledge Commons–your profile, groups, sites, and KCWorks. When we say exploring, we mean click on all the links! Read all the things! See what you can see from the bird’s eye view!

Now that you’ve done this, answer the following in your reply to the post. Remember, there are no wrong answers! This week’s quest is all about reflection. You’ll receive your badge if you do this.
- If you’d like to, introduce yourself however you’d like: what are your research interests? How long have you been using Knowledge Commons? No need to be too formal–if you’d like to tell us what you’d name your future pet, we’d be happy to hear it! This question is not required to earn a badge.

If you answer the above questions as a reply to this post by 11:59 ET on Sunday, August 16, you will have officially earned your first badges in the Knowledge Quest. You can expect to see them on your profile within two days of completing the challenge.
If you miss the deadline for receiving a badge, you can absolutely still complete any Knowledge Quest challenges! You will just not receive a badge.
