Welcome to week 3 of the Knowledge Quest! You’ve explored your surroundings and updated your profile.We’re changing up from our originally published schedule and making this week all about making connections in the Commons community. 

This week’s quest is a bit different from the previous two. Instead of one way to earn your badge, we’re introducing the intrigue of side quests! There are multiple paths you can take to earn your badge this week, based on your interests and your experience on Knowledge Commons. Our focus this week is on building community in the Commons and leveraging our tools to fit your needs and share your work. 

Your three options are below. Choose your own adventure. 

Attend our “Open Scholarship Starts Here” webinar

On Tuesday, August 25th at 1pm ET, we are holding an introductory webinar on Knowledge Commons. You’ll hear more about the work our team does, use cases for the Commons, and an introduction to all of our tools. Whether you’re new to the Commons or have been a lifelong user, you’re guaranteed to learn things at the session. Make sure you register in order to attend. 

If you attend the webinar, you’ll earn the Community Connections badge. We also have a special badge for anyone who attends, so just by being in the room, you’ll earn that too! 

Create or edit a group or site

Another option for earning your badges this week is to either create a new site or group or to edit one you already have.

• Commons groups allow users to run a discussion board (like this one!), create an events calendar, share documents, and upload KCWorks deposits
• Commons sites are WordPress-based websites that can be used for portfolios, projects and so much more.

If you’d like to learn more about either of these, remember that you can browse existing public groups and sites by selecting them from the navigation bar on the left of your screen. We’ve linked above our help guides on these two features, and you can also check out our showcase blogs. 

Upload to KCWorks

KCWorks is the open access repository of Knowledge Commons. The repository allows our users to preserve their work and receive a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), display the version history of deposits, edit metadata after publication, and upload multiple files under the same DOI. This is just a small taste of what KCWorks offers. KCWorks also includes collections functionality, which allows users to curate KCWorks uploads together in a collection. An administrator is notified of all works added to the collection and can approve or reject them as needed.

Anyone can upload to KCWorks, and you can get all your questions about the repository answers on our support site. 

This week’s badges

As a reminder, there are three sidequests you can choose from to earn your badge! 

• Attend our webinar on Tuesday (make sure you register beforehand!)
• Create a new group or site
• Edit an existing group or site
• Upload an item of your choosing to KCWorks

To earn a badge, write a short post in this group telling us what side quest you took this week. Share a link to the group, site, or KCWorks upload. If you’re planning to attend the webinar, be using Zoom’s reporting feature to track attendees and assign badges.
