Knowledge Quest Week Five: Secrets of the Commons

We have officially reached the final week of the Knowledge Quest! Thanks to everyone who participated…but the game isn’t over yet!

Every noble quest is laden with secrets, and this week’s final challenge will help you unearth a few secrets about Knowledge Commons. For this quest, we’re giving you five clues with an associated link that contains the answer. Some of the clues may be knowledge you already have, while others may require your research skills to search for answers. The answer to the clue will be mentioned somewhere on the page that is linked–in some cases, you’ll find the answer on the page quickly, but in others you may need to explore a little more!

Post your responses to each clue on the discussion board–and please try not to peek at the answers provided by other travelers! However, if you do, remember that someone might be leading you astray. 🙂

Question 1

Clue: A big chunk of our team calls Michigan home! Michigan’s largest city, Detroit, sits right on the Detroit River, with Windsor, Canada, just on the other side. There are three ways to drive from Detroit to Windsor: one takes you through a tunnel beneath the river, while the other two take you across bridges. One bridge is named after a legendary hockey player…and the other? Well, that’s your secret.

Question 2

Clue: Knowledge Commons calls Michigan State University home, located in the city of East Lansing. Just a short drive away is Lansing, the state capital of Michigan — because one Lansing wasn’t enough! In the prehistoric era known as 2002, the state legislature officially crowned an Ice Age creature as its state fossil. And lucky for you, that ancient creature is also your secret!

Question 3

Clue: Michigan State University started out as a land-grant university with a decidedly agricultural flavor (pun intended). Over the years, campus has been home to plenty of adorable farm animals. Now, imagine you’re less interested in counting the students who have called MSU home over the years and more interested in comparing their numbers to those of the four-legged residents of campus. If you were studying the ratio of MSU students to farm animals, you’d be exploring the subject that happens to be this secret.

Question 4

Clue: Let’s be honest: no quest is complete without a little stargazing! If your travels ever bring you to visit the Commons crew in Michigan, consider taking a road trip to the northern reaches of the state, where the skies are dark, the stars are spectacular, and if the conditions align perfectly, you might even get lucky enough to spot the aurora borealis dancing overhead. So, while you’re scanning the heavens through your telescope, keep your eyes peeled… you just might spot this Commons secret hiding among the stars!

Question 5

Clue: So far, our clues have been very Michigan focused, but let’s zoom out for a moment because we’re an international team! Our reach stretches from the United States and Canada all the way across the pond to England and Greece. And that’s just our team — our incredible user base takes us even farther around the globe! Your Commons secret is both the approximate number of active users you can expect to visit Knowledge Commons on any given day, and if you’ve got a good ear for a beat, you might recognize that number as the BPM of “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson.
